In the performance I used the previously recorded field recordings of various places in and around Hamburg, found according to a concept around the word Murphy, a record player with toasts that fell on the plates. And the digital possibilities of a laptop in 2006, through which the recordings were processed in space. There are frequent pauses in this recording of the performance, a rare case in electronic concerts and one of the reasons why 16 years later it was important to release this recording of a unique performance.

Press release:

Certainty of action is an illusion in the mad complexity of life. Why do inanimate objects behave the way they do? Where do these minor and major adversities of everyday life come from? In our brain, we update our worldview ten times a second. Murphy's law shows us what can happen when these mental processes fail. A closer look at Murphy's Law gives us a better insight into ourselves.
Many scientists have been fascinated by Murphy's Law and have repeatedly tried to test it experimentally. For example, several experimental setups have examined the free fall of breakfast toast, which falls off the table primarily onto the buttered side. Only giants over three meters tall with oversized kitchen furniture would be able to specifically avoid this mishap.
Skepticism about the research results to date is warranted, however. The performance Murphy's Fall takes an artistic look at the famous toast test for the first time. Different possibilities of the "free fall! are examined - physically, philosophically, poetically. Quantum of action, natural constants, angular velocities, moments of inertia and unstable positions become important parameters of the experiment. The participating 13 artists show a pictorial laboratory situation. The room is brightly lit in white and filled with strange soundscapes and toaster concerts. A scent of toasted bread is in the air. We can watch the slices of bread as they start to move from different heights. Furniture floating in the air, moving table edges, hand crank machines, mountains of toasters, plucked tablecloths, computer generated statistics give a picture from a fictional world. In this strange place, lab assistants in white coats move about, continuously pushing slices of toast over edges, filling out evaluation sheets with meticulous statistics. In film projections, the free toast case is traced cinematically. The "scientists! take cover in front of falling slices of toast. From day to day, the toast slices form larger mountains on the floor. More and more statistic sheets fill the walls.

The performance conveys a picture tableau to the visitors of the Kunstaltonale - a strange space in which experiments are carried out devoid of any concrete economic usefulness. The events offer new perspectives and ways of perception. They thus arrive in the realm of the imaginary, where they are absorbed into art.

At Kulturforum Altona, all visitors are invited to conduct their own experiments.

The performance Murphy's Fall is not least a homage to the great Irish writer Samuel Beckett, whose 100th birthday is being commemorated this year. Beckett called his first novel, published in 1935, "Murphy!", visionarily anticipating that the tragicomic fate of his title character could one day be captured by a physical formula that so aptly describes the human condition.
